Mig 27 Flogger D - 1/72 scale model The Mig-27 Flogger D is a fascinating aircraft, an updated Mig-23. I especially liked this aircraft because of the swing wings and unique shape. Not knowing much about Soviet aircraft when I built this one (1988), I went pretty much by the box art and instructions.

CONSTRUCTION:

This is a good kit right out of the box. I started by constructing the cockpit and adding stretched sprue and strip styrene for details such as electric boxes, panels, levers and so on. I used automotive pinstriping tape for details like seat cushions and seat belts. At the same time, I detailed and painted the areas inside the fuselage that contains the cockpit assembly. After the fuselage halves (with cockpit) had been assembled, I then painted and detailed the dash area and heads up display. Next I masked the canopy with automotive tape and glued it in place.

PAINTING:

The rest of the kit went together without a hitch, a little careful work and it was ready for paint. I first painted the underside, allowed it to dry a few days, masked off the correct areas, then proceeded with the brown/green camoflage. After applying the decals and giving the whole thing a coat of clear sealer, I applied a mixture of black and burnt sierra oil paint to panel lines and recessed areas and wiped off (or rather scrubbed off) the excess. Next came the landing gear, pylons and other small details along with a thin flat clear coat. A little pastel chalk on the panel lines and wear areas, another flat clear coat and it was done, awaiting a one inch pilot.
